other news: ‘Motes’ sensors receive solar battery
Monday, 6 November 2006, 11:57 UhrKommentar write novel wireless sensors – motes – will in future be operated by solar energy. That said Kristofer Pister, Professor of Computer Science at the University of California at Berkeley, across from the service industry eWeek.
Pister is considered one of the founders of the Motes concept. Motes are wireless sensors the size of a dust particle (Dust) – Motes why a network is referred to as ‘Smartdust’. The sensors are suitable to collect data on light, temperature or vibration and forward. A ‘Smartdust’ network can cover a radius of up to 300 meters.
Each contains Motes Circuits, communication technology and a power supply. Is new now is that Pister will develop over the next three years, a “true single-chip Mote. The power supply should it take a solar cell that is integrated into the sensor. This eliminates the external power supply, so Pister. The sensor could be smaller still.
to integrate the energy source in the Mote would be “a real breakthrough,” said Marlene Bourne, principal analyst at Bourne Research. Nor is the solution not so far as that one “just take a handful of Motes and sprinkle them around in an aircraft could”. Currently, the sensors are limited mainly by the battery power.
